Disable Facebook Theater Mode

Recently Facebook rolled out a new way to view pictures, they call it Theater Mode.  In theory it’s a great new way to view pictures however, many users have complained and want their old picture view back.  If you’re one of those people this simple hack is for you…

The good news is there is a super simple way to side step the new “Theater Mode” photo view on Facebook.

  1. Open the picture you’d like to see in the new, Theater mode.
  2. Look to your browser URL bar and you’ll see a rather long URL,  at the end of this URL remove &theater from the end of the URL and hit Enter.
  3. Boom, you’re now viewing pictures the good ole way!
  4. This is not a “Permanent” solution so Rinse and repeat as often as you’d like.

Alternatively, you can use these browser plug ins: Install for Firefox here and Chrome here to permanently disable Facebook photo theater view!  Sorry Internet Explorer users :/ gotta do it manually for now.

So, we want to know… Are you sick of the new Facebook picture viewer?

Update: As several users have pointed out, you can just “REFRESH” the page or press Ctrl+R to return to normal viewing as well.

How Facebook Started the Egpytian Revolution of 2011.

No, the Egyptian protests didn’t start like this…

However, it did start in a eerily similar fashion.  Here’s the story on how Facebook started the Egyptian protests…

On July 9th, 2010 a Facebook group that was started called “We are all Khaled Said” .  The group was started to honor a young Egyptian named, Khaled Said whom died in a controversial death.

According to Wikipedia: Khaled Said is, a young businessman from Alexandria, was reportedly beaten to death by local police this summer – well before rumblings of the country’s current unrest. But a Facebook page that bears his name has been one of the driving forces behind the upheaval that has been shocking Egypt….

This Facebook page still exists although many of the original members cannot access it (due to a countrywide internet blockade) to see what is going on.  We encourage you to join the page so you can get a different opinion on what is going on in that country. It is really quite remarkable to go back to January 25th, 2011 and see the Egyptian National and International Protests being organized.  Then read how much has happened since then, it is absolutely remarkable what that country has gone through and what it is going through now.

The page is run by an anonymous self-proclaimed Egyptian known as El Saheed which translates to Martyr.

Now here is where things get interesting…

“The power of Facebook is that our updates reach to everyone’s wall,” El Shaheed said. “Some of the videos we publish get shared on people’s walls more than 30,000 times. That’s how powerful a virus can be…Once it’s out, it goes everywhere. It’s unstoppable.”

Here is the original post that started the call for January 25th, 2011 to be a day of PEACEFUL national protest in Egypt….

Dated January 15 at 6:06am

The rest, as they say is history.  On January 25th, 2011 a Facebook group of approximately 25,000 (at the time) Egyptians started a revolution.

Browse Facebook Securely

Recently there have been a number of simple hacks that allow your Facebook to be compromised.  Today, Facebook announced a new feature that will help solve many of your security issues….

You can now easily prevent that with this awesome (and long overdue) new feature from Facebook that allows you to browse the website securely.  Spread the word! Why?  Because it’s optional and you have to enable it yourself !  To enable it simply go to the Account Security section of the Account Settings page and enable it.

Essentially it works by adding military grade encryption to your browser, similar to when you’re checking out on an e-commerce website.  In our opinion, this should become a DEFAULT setting for anyone who uses Facebook.  Until it becomes the default setting make sure to protect yourself and change it today, it only takes a second…

“Starting today we’ll provide you with the ability to experience Facebook entirely over HTTPS. You should consider enabling this option if you frequently use Facebook from public Internet access points found at coffee shops, airports, libraries, or schools,” the post says. “The option will exist as part of our advanced security features, which you can find in the Account Security section of the Account Settings page.”

Using HTTPS may mean that some pages will take a little bit longer to load, and some third-party applications aren’t currently supported, the company said. The option is rolling out over the next few weeks. “We hope to offer HTTPS as a default whenever you are using Facebook sometime in the future,” the post says.

“Every user’s Facebook page is unique and it’s been complex pulling together all the different parts,” said Facebook Chief Security Officer Joe Sullivan when asked what the time frame is to making HTTPS the default setting. “It’s an interesting technical challenge for the company.”

After you modify that account setting you will notice that whenever you browse Facebook your browser bar will show “https://www.Facebook.com“  and you should notice the LOCK graphic denoting that you are now browsing on a secure encrypted protection.  It will look something like this:

typically appearing in your browsers bottom right corner, this will vary by browser.  If you don’t see a lock, then you’re not protected.

What is Facebook?

Sounds like a silly question right?  However, do you know how to explain what is Facebook?  The fact is, there are only 600Million people are on Facebook.  Only 600Million out of 6,852,472,823 people in the world.  Less than 9% of the world is on Facebook.  I guess Mr. Zuckerberg has his work cut out for him!  With less than 9% of the population on Facebook, you probably get the question… What is Facebook?  Not a simple question to answer. So next time some one asks you, don’t show them “The Social Network”, show them this…

Oldest Person on Facebook is 103 and SHE updates from her iPad!

You thought your parents on Facebook was bad?  How about your grandparents? What about your GREAT Grandparent?  That seems to be the case with Lillian Lowe whom has recently taken the title of oldest Facebooker from 104-year-old Ivy Bean, who died in her sleep this past July.

Lillian checks her wall about twice a week and is friends with 34 different people, including 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren!

Born in 1907, Lillian has seen all kinds of changes during her lifetime – the sinking of the Titanic, two World Wars, the first computer, and now the advent of social networking and tablet computers!

Thanks to the publicity that comes with being dubbed the oldest person on Facebook, she has recently received over 900 Facebook friend requests. She says she has also heard of Twitter, but does not know what it is.
